What is carrier tape made of?

ABS印刷抗静电片材

The carrier tape is a long strip of plastic film to hold "pockets" of electronic components. These tapes are generally used to store electronic components, and integrated circuits, not only for packaging but also as a protective layer that can protect electronic devices from physical and electrostatic damage during transportation and storage. They are mainly made of polystyrene and polyester or polyethylene terephthalate and differ primarily in the high temperatures and humidity they can withstand.

Carrier tape have a feeding mechanism that transports the original parts to the SMT machine during the assembly of electronic components. Carrier tape consists of three parts: the base film, the cover tape and the adhesive layer.

What are the different classifications of carrier tapes?

HIPS (1)

Carrier tapes have strict requirements according to the anti-static level. According to the anti-static level, the market is divided into three main classifications: conductive, dissipative and insulating.

The carrier tape can also be classified by cavity: currently, there are mainly embossed carrier tape and perforated carrier tape.

Embossed carrier tape: This is formed by bubbling the tape to create a concave pocket. This method allows the manufacturer to customize the electronic components according to the customer's requirements.

Perforated carrier tape: a perforated or semi-perforated pocket with perforated cavities on the tape by die-cutting. Due to the limitation of tape thickness, perforated carrier tapes are only suitable for relatively small electronic components.

Classification by material: The carrier tapes on the market are mainly made of plastic or paper materials. Embossed carrier tapes are primarily made of plastic materials. The vast majority of plastic carrier tapes in the industry are made of PC, PS, ABS, etc.

What are the benefits of using carrier tapes?

There are several benefits of using carrier tapes in the electronics manufacturing industry:

1. Increase efficiency and productivity: Carrier tape makes assembly faster and more consistent, reducing production time and increasing productivity.

2. Reduce Labor Costs: Carrier tape eliminates the need to handle parts manually, reducing labour costs and increasing efficiency.

3. Increase product reliability: Carrier tape protects components during shipping and storage, ensuring they remain in good condition and maintain their performance.

4. Enhanced protection during transport and storage: Carrier tape protects components from environmental factors such as vibration, moisture and temperature fluctuations. Word-for-word translation
